Schools

For a number of years, the MDU has engaged itself in strengthening its ties with comprehensive schools in the Manchester area as part of the university’s widening participation scheme. This has involved training youngsters to debate whilst encouraging an active interest in current affairs through school visits and co-operating with teaching staff.

Annual Schools Competition

The first Annual Manchester Nation Schools Debating Competition was held in 2007, and we have been hosting them each February ever since. The day-long event will see schools from all over the UK converge at the University of Manchester to engage in competition against other school teams, with competitors between the ages of 14-19. This is an excellent opportunity to engage students in a fun activity that will improve their ability to formulate arguments, increase their confidence with public speaking and challenge their thoughts on different topical issues. Expect lively debate, free refreshments and a chance to experience the inside of one of Europe’s largest and most vibrant Universities. Register interest by contacting our convener at schools@mdu.manchester.ac.uk.
