With Theresa May’s recent rise to the UK’s highest office, there have disagreements in feminist movements over how they ought to respond to only the second female Prime Minister this country has ever had. Some have argued that this represents an important step forward for feminism and thus feminists owe their support to Theresa May and her government. Others have countered that it would be wrong to expect feminists to support a politician based only on their gender, or that endorsing a conservative Prime Minister would be a betrayal of feminism’s radical and reformist roots. This week at the MDU we debate the motion: This House believes that feminists should support Theresa May.
Speaking for the proposition we have the socialist, trade unionist and feminist activist and writer Pia Feig along with the University of Manchester’s own Professor of Public Policy, Francesca Gains.
Making the case against the motion we are pleased to welcome Bernadette Hyland, author of feminist book Northern ReSisters and contributor to the Lipstick Socialist, alongside Laura Smith, a star competitive debater for the MDU and its former president.
