Advanced Training

Introduction

Advanced training is held every Monday from 6:00-8:00pm in University Place. It’s suitable for more active and enthusiastic members who are keen on becoming competitive. Workshops are tailored to go further in-depth into techniques and strategies used specifically in competition, so members are expected to have a strong fundamental understanding of the British Parliamentary format. It’s conducted by our Advanced Training Officer.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ’s):

  • How do I know whether I am suitable for advanced training?
Advanced training is open to any and all members of the MDU willing to put in time and dedication into competitive debating, so members are welcome to come to the sessions. You may want to try out a novice training session first, and depending on your performance in a practice debate, our training officer or your judge may talk to you about joining advanced training. If you have extensive experience in debating before university and you want to continue your debate career, that’s also a good sign that you’re fit for advanced!
  • What is expected of advanced training members?
We understand that people join debating for different goals. Some may want to improve their confidence in public speaking while others want to do well in debate competitions. While novice training sessions can benefit a wide range of members with differing levels of commitment, those who want to come to advanced training are expected to devote more time and effort. This means that the Advanced Training Officer expects members to attend and speak consistently every week as well as attend a few competitions throughout the year.
  • What are the benefits of becoming competitive?
Believe it or not, competitive debating can be good fun! Many of our more competitive speakers enjoy the intellectual exercise, and have experienced spillover benefits. In general, the more time you devote to debate, the rate at which you improve at speaking persuasively and forming coherent arguments increases!
