This house would legalise all drugs
October 9, 2014 @ 5:00 pm / 6:30 pm
The ability to make decisions for ourselves is a form of control which all human beings value. There are times when that control is taken from us; for the good of others, or more controversially, for the good of ourselves.
The prohibition of both substance use and abuse represents a significant incursion on our liberty in the name of protection. Advocates for prohibition suggest that the use of drugs carry significant health risks but also impede upon an individuals ability to make rational decisions, leading to addiction, poverty and crime.
This prohibition comes at the cost of a “war on drugs” and the criminality that seizes control of them in the absence of a legitimate provision.
Is it time to change tactics? The Manchester Debating Union asks the question: should we legalise all drugs?
