The referendum on Great Britain’s membership of the European Union produced nearly unprecedented political fallout. With the country’s two largest parties falling into factional disputes and the change in leadership in the Government many have argued that the current parliament no longer represents the will of the public and that Theresa May’s administration has no democratic mandate to lead negotiations on our withdrawal from the European Union. Whilst the Prime Minister has ruled out a snap election, the Conservative Party’s slim majority and rebellious back benchers means it might not be entirely off the table. At the first event of the year at the Manchester Debating Union we will debate the motion: Given the aftermath of the referendum, This House would call an early General Election.
Speaking in favour of the motion we are proud to welcome Lee Dargue, campaigner for the Liberal Democrats and honorary Vice President of the Liberal Youth, alongside James Gill from the Manchester branch of the Labour group Momentum. They will make the case that any democratic mandate from the 2015 election has been lost and that the government should seek reelection before deciding on the UK’s response to the referendum.
They will be opposed by Ryan Khurana of the Manchester Conservative Future, and Rebecca Montacute of the Labour Party, an Owen Smith supporter and former Chair of the MDU, who will together argue that no early election should be called.
