Marriage is an ancient institution which is deeply ingrained in many cultures around the world. Advocates for marriage say that it creates strong family units, and is a vehicle by which communities can sanctify a partnership. However, critics argue that it’s an inflexible institution which promotes an outdated way of thinking; lack of sexual freedom, exclusion of LGBT members, religious and state control of society, and an idea of co-ownership that is especially detrimental to women. Proponents counter this by pointing to the legalisation of gay marriage, saying that marriage is an institution that can change with the times.
