For a number of years, the MDU has engaged itself in strengthening its ties with comprehensive schools in the Manchester area as part of the university’s widening participation scheme. This has involved training youngsters to debate whilst encouraging an active interest in current affairs through school visits and co-operating with teaching staff.
On the 3rd of February 2018, the Manchester Debating Union is hosting the 11th Annual Manchester National Schools Debating Competition. The day-long event will see schools from all over the UK converge at the University of Manchester to engage in competition against other school teams, with competitors between the ages of 14-19. This is an excellent opportunity to engage students in a fun activity that will improve their ability to formulate arguments, increase their confidence with public speaking and challenge their thoughts on different topical issues. Expect lively debate, free refreshments and a chance to experience the inside of one of Europe’s largest and most vibrant Universities. Click here to register your interest.
The Manchester Debating Union are passionate about getting more young people involved in debating. Reflective of this, we have our own schools training program, which we take great pride in. We can adapt this flexibly to your needs. If you would like to book a session or find out more, please contact Sarah Bayliss, the coordinator of the scheme this year at firstname.lastname@example.org. Click here for more info.
